Fall Road Trip – Day 1: Packing It All Up and Fitting it In – Clothes & Blankets

The first day of our family road trips always seem to start out the same way. It’s rather mundane, but probably the most important piece of any road trip – gathering everything up, packing it up and getting it all to fit in.

And for me, the success of a road trip has a lot to do with making sure you have easy access to the things you need more often, so I consider it all a lot like putting together a puzzle.

First gathering up your pieces – that’s what you’ll need on your road trip. For us we have a couple categories:

Clothes, blankets, and pillows

For a long road trip, like this one, we are only bringing three days worth of clothes to conserve on space. We’ll use hotel laundry facilities along the way. But given we are travelling during winter, through snowy areas, layers are critical. So even with 3 days worth of clothes, we still end up with a large mountain of clothes when you are talking 6 people and a dog (yes, Jazzy is bringing her sweater too :) ).

Then because we are traveling for a couple 30 hour stretches, we bring a pillow and blankets for 5 people, that way it’s more comfortable to sleep in the car. These are tucked away in the roof bag during day time travel or days where we are stopping for the night.

All this can get unweildy. In the past we’ve used duffle bags, garbage bags, and suitcases. Experimenting with different combinations. This time Greg suggested we try Space Bags, those plastic bags that you suck all the air out off using a vacuum. We are going to be using our air pump that we use for air mattresses when we are camping. As you can see from the photo of K packing up the blankets and pillows below, these are already showing promise of saving some space.

Once we figure out the clothes, blankets, and pillows, then we move on to more practical things, like technology and food.
